Best Anal Lubes | Fall 2016

In the world of sex, there are three types of lubricants: oil, water, and silicone, each of which has their own unique characteristics and feels.   So what are the best anal lubes?  A bit of it comes down to preference, because among these three categories, there are advantages and drawbacks to each, especially when it comes to anal sex.  I will try to give you a little background, along with my impressions after using each one to give you a better idea of how I arrived at out list of the best lubes for anal sex.

The Best Silicone Anal Lubes

For anal sex, silicone lubes are ideal.   They are slippery, long lasting, and easy to clean up.  Most importantly, though, they are condom safe.  As the name states these lubes are made from a silicone base, which are specifically designed to create minimal heat and friction.  This makes them the best lubes for anal sex out of all of your options. My personal favorite lube is one that I have been using for a long time and despite having tested countless brands, I keep coming back to it.

the best anal lubes pjur analyse me

Pjur Analyse Me! Anal GlideFive-stars

Pjur is known for making some of the best anal lubes around because their products are designed specifically for anal sex.  Analyse Me includes an anal relaxant making it ideal for people who have had problems with pain or discomfort in the past.

MaleQ Reader Review:
Fabulous! – Analyse Me has to be the best lube for anal sex ever! Silky smooth and helps make it easier to take either a toy or the real deal! Love this lube!”

Analyse Me! also comes in a water based variant which is about $5 cheaper per bottle and stacks up pretty well performance wise.  It also plays well with all your toys and the cheaper price makes it worth a look.

If by chance you are looking for a more powerful relaxing effect and an added extra numbing agent then I recommend our previous years’ top pick, Pjur Backdoor.

It is a stronger formula and packs a bit more punch.  You can check out the full Backdoor Review here to give you a better idea of what I mean.

But for most people, Analyse Me! Silicone is your best option as a well balanced, great feeling anal lube that is not over powering.  Be sure to read the full Analyse Me review for a more in-depth look at my thoughts and impressions.

the best anal lubes swiss navy

Swiss Navy Silicone

If you don’t need the relaxant, then do yourself a favor and try Swiss Navy – it is without a doubt my absolute favorite.  The formula is a pure silicone but is thinner and therefore less tacky than Pjur, and in many ways I prefer the consistency.

Not to mention it is almost $8 cheaper with MORE lube per bottle compared to Pjur, (4oz vs. 3.4oz).  I also love the pump top which you can lock and unlock for travel and it great for one hand use.  So if you don’t need the added cost of a relaxant and are looking for a lube that feels great, then go for Swiss Navy.

the best anal lubes gun oil

Gun Oilfour-half-stars

The single best thing about Gun Oil? It lasts forever.  Gun Oil is one of the slipperiest, smoothest, and long lasting lubes I have tested and its slickness makes it ideal for anal.

Overall, Gun Oil is a more “heavy duty” choice and good for the experienced trying to “go bigger”.  I also have to tip my hat to the packaging – nothing about this bottle suggests “anal sex”.  So, if you want something a little more discrete and heavy duty, you have found your match.

“Feels Natural, lasts long – Feels natural and not sticky, yet did not dry out fast. Very good product without odor and not hard to keep around since it does not look interesting to prying eyes.”

The Best Water Based Anal Lubes

Like their silicone counterparts, water based lubes are completely condom safe and great for anal sex.  The main difference between water and silicone-based lubricants is how long they last.  The major disadvantage to a water-based anal lubes is that the body absorbs the water and therefore the lube can dry out rather quickly. This means that you will need to re-apply it fairly regularly.

On the other hand, this means that water lubes are a breeze to clean up because unlike silicone lubes, there is no oily residue left over.  Moreover, water based lubes are also friendly with all toys, as silicone lubes with silicone toys are a no-no.  Not to mention, water lubes are often a cheaper alternative, and therefore come in more generous quantities.

the best anal lubes Water Based elbow H2O

Elbow Grease H2O

There are two things I look for when picking a water lube – consistency and longevity.   In this case, H2O beats all other lubes out there.

It is one of the longest lasting water based lubes I have ever tested and has a thick slippery feel.

I have tested so many water lubes that dry out and don’t perform anywhere close to silicone, but if I didn’t know any better I would have guessed Elbow Grease to be a water-silicone hybrid, as it is super thick and super slippery.  Best of all, it comes in large bottles and a little bit goes a long way.  Let’s not forget that it plays well with any toy you throw at it making it a more versatile option.

the best anal lubes Swiss Navy

Swiss Navyfour-half-stars

Since I posted this article I have had a number of readers request me to add Swiss Navy to the list.  I decided to give it a try for myself and I can easily understand why this lube has such a great reputation.

It is a heavy duty, ultra slick and water-based, yet gives all the slippery fun plus a little more.  If you are going the extra mile, or the extra hour in the bedroom this will definitely keep up to pace.  Not to mention it is very inexpensive for the amount of lube you get.

the best anal lubes smooth

Smooth and Slick

Reader Review:
Just Right Smooth & Slick Lubricant – “Wife loves this lubricant. Just the right amount of slick. Not too much, not too little. In addition, a great price.”

In terms of price and performance, you will not find a lube with a better value.  At a mere $10 a bottle, Smooth and Slick gets you the biggest bang for your buck.  The low price means I was never afraid to use it generously, which in terms of anal sex, the more the better.

To top it off, despite its low price, it is actually a surprisingly good feeling lube.  If you are on a budget or looking for a good pair lube with one the more high-end brands, then Smooth and Slick is your best bet.

The Best Oil Based Anal Lubes

This category of lubes is last on the list because if you plan on practicing safer-sex (i.e. using condoms) then you need to be more mindful.  These are lubricants made from an oil base which means they are not latex compatible and will break down condoms and some toys.  But one of the goals of this list is to show you ALL of your options.

So, if you want to use a condom then DO NOT use oil lubes.

But now that that’s out of the way, as the name states, oil lubes are made from oil and are some of the slipperiest, longest lasting lubes you can buy!  They are great for extended play and mean you never have to lube up again halfway through sex!  These are also a great option for non-latex toys and only become more slippery as you add heat!

As a drawback oil base lubes are more of a pain to clean up and can take multiple washes with soap and hot water to finally go away.  But if you can see past these drawbacks they are some of the best performing lubes out there!

the best anal lubes elbow grease

Elbow Greasefour-stars

Elbow grease is a creamy oil lube and is about as slippery as it gets.  Yes, there is no anal relaxant included like with Analyse Me! but in terms of raw lubrication Elbow Grease tops out.

This is more for the heavy duty user, and if you are looking to reduce friction to as little as possible and “go a little bit bigger” with a toy or the real thing then this will help make you more comfortable and those bigger sizes more manageable. For the mo more adventurous user, you should make this your first option.

“This stuff is AWESOME. Its nice and slick and it doesn’t dry out fast so you don’t have to keep adding lube. One of the big tubs of this lube will last a good while. It washes away nice and odor free with just some simple soap and water. I love it!”

the best anal lubes him

ID HIM Leather

ID him is a very similar lube with very similar performance.  Yes, it is also oil-based and comes as a cream which is easy to apply and super slippery.  This is the Him leather variant which has a leather scent, which I personally like and I think adds a bit to the “kink” factor.

So why is this listed as number two?  Like I said these are nearly identical, but I found the clean-up with him to be a bit more of a pain.  Plus, the leather might now be for everyone.  But what Him does have to offer is price so it is still worth giving a look.

Works for hours – “I have used Him lubricating cream for 4 days now and I am completely satisfied with the performance and last quality. I am able to reinsert my toys without the need to add more lube. And that is a winner in my ass.” – Chrissy4605

Anal Lube Injectors

In addition to buying the right anal lube, you should also look into getting an anal lube injector.  This makes applying lube as a bottom effortless.  It literally shoots a generous amount of lube deep inside making prep extremely easy.  It took me awhile to start using one, but it was well worth making the switch.

My current usage actually a combination of silicone based and water based lubes.  This gets the best of both worlds. I get the relaxing effects of the Pjur Analyse Me, and the option to use as much of a cheaper water-based lube like Swiss Navy as I need.

If you are having anal sex for the first time there is a lot you can do to make you and your partner a little more comfortable.  Getting the right lube is the best first step, but if you want to fully prepare yourself then it is good to go in with a little practice.  This will give  you will have a better idea of what to expect and allow your body to get used to a new and unfamiliar experience.  For a more in-depth guide check out How to Have Anal Sex for the First Time and take a look at our anal sex starter kit.

I just want to tell you that I’m newbie to weblog and really enjoyed this blog site. Very likely I’m likely to bookmark your blog post . You absolutely have perfect well written articles. Thanks a bunch for revealing your blog site.

  • Jason Trainer

A well researched article! Oil based lubes should be avoided if you are practicing safe sex for sure, but the neat thing is that a lot of typically oil based brands like Boy Butter and Elbow Grease also made water based versions that are condom compatible (and toy compatible which is dope!)

    • Matthew Brown

      Hi Stephen,

If you are breaking out after sex it likely means that you have an allergy to one of the ingredients in either the condoms or lubricant you are using. My first suggestion would be to switch over to latex free condoms and see if that helps. Also I recommend water-based lubricants as they have less chemicals and are primarily made of water. As I said in your other comment if you are still having irritation after you should contact your doctor for an allergy test.

      I hope this helps.

What this blog fails to mention is that many water-based lubes, including Astroglide as mentioned, contain glycerin. This is also used in rectal suppositories and can stimulate a bowel movement. Not something you really want happening in the heat of the moment. Astroglide makes a glycerin-free water-based lube but I’ve only seen it in very small bottles that are as expensive as the bigger bottles of the other stuff.

  • david

Does the relaxant in the backdoor glide affect the top in the relationship. Does it stiffle an erection or number the feeling for the top?

    • Matthew Brown

      Hi David,

Yes, the numbing agent in Pjur Backdoor can desensitize the person who is topping with extended use. You can avoid this by using a condom or switching to Pjur without the relaxant if he is too sensitive to it.

      Best of luck.

  • Ben Dover

This is a less common question that I’ve been hard pressed to find an answer to…Is there any sensation INCREASING lube or practice? Like… safe anal lubes that heat up or tingle or any kind of added sensation? Maybe I’m just getting old… I once administered some liquid vitamin D after a cleansing and was VERY pleasantly surprised to experience an amazing warmth that spread within me, though it was short lived, and is what inspires me to ask about what other fun substances or practices could offer similar or new backdoor experiences…

    • Matthew Brown

      Hi Ben,

You can look into Pjur Stimulating and Warming Lubes, although you want to be careful because sensation lubes can cause some uncomfortable situations for whoever is bottoming. It doesn’t hurt to experiment, just make sure that he isn’t overly sensitive to the extra heat.

      Best of luck!

a few year ago, I have an anal fissure so I stop having anal sex and recently start it up again. I have been with my partner for quite sometimes and we do not use condoms. I am very much afraid of paint and would like something a bit more slippery so it’s easier to go in.
Would you recommend the Maximus or is there any lube you would recommend?

    • Loren

      Hi Charlse,

I have had a lot of problems and I know exactly what you mean. The best thing to do is make sure, first and for most, that you are practicing good hygiene. Always wash down there with a finger and water when you are in the shower, even if it stings. It will make the healing process go a lot faster, and with daily cleaning you can go really far at preventing fissures. For lubes, try something with an anal relaxant. Pjur is my best over all choice, but if you pair it with a thick, watery lube like Maximus you will see a big decrease in pain. Also take look at my article here about dealing with and avoiding fissures.

      Hope this helps,

      Best of luck!

I have a bit of an odd question, but I hope someone can help.
I’ve tried a few products in the past and found that they make me gag and vomit. I don’t know if its a smell or something else. I also have the same problem with antibacterial hand gels too.
So do any of these have a strong odour?
