Even Straight People Have to Come Out of the Closet

The term “coming out” seems to be a term that is only associated with gay people.  It doesn’t matter if you are gay or straight, we all have to someday open the door and step out of the closet, taking our secrets with us.  As Ash Beckham illustrates in this awesome Ted Talk, we all have the shared experience admitting our own hard to tell secrets.

The thing I like best about this talk is how Ash breaks down the walls between LGBTQ people and straight people, explaining how experiences gay and straight life experiences are not all that different from one another.  One of my favorite points was how she talks about how people tend to compare their own “coming out” experiences in terms of how hard it was.  For some reason, we tend to downplay someone else’s story in relation to our own, when in reality, hard is just hard.

It doesn’t matter if you have just gone bankrupt, cheated, lied, or been dishonest with someone.  Coming clean is damn difficult, and we can all understand the feeling of having a secret build up inside.   The anxiety can be enough to cripple you.

Her speech does a great job putting the experience of being in the closet as LGBTQ to other people.  The stress, no matter if it be about sexuality or any other secret is something everyone can relate to.
