In the world of sex, there are three types of lubricants: oil, water and silicone, each of which has their own unique characteristics and feels. Among these three categories, there are advantages and drawbacks to each, especially when it comes to anal sex. I will try to give you a little background, along with my impressions after using each one to give you a better idea of how I arrived at out list of the best lubes for anal sex.
For anal sex, silicone lubes are ideal. They are slippery, long lasting, and easy to clean up. Most importantly, though, they are condom safe. As the name states these lubes are made from a silicone base, which are specifically designed to create minimal heat and friction. This makes them the best lubes for anal sex out of all of your options. My personal favorite lube is one that I have been using for a long time and despite having tested countless brands, I keep coming back to it.
Pjur is known for making some of the best anal lubes around because their products are designed specifically for anal sex. Analyse Me includes an anal relaxant making it ideal for people who have had problems with pain or discomfort in the past.
Pjur has refined the formula with natural “Jojoba extracts” which as they say, “helps to soften the skin and anal sphincter” and in my experience are not overpowering. It also has a nice thick consistency that’s super slippery and long lasting.
Analyse Me! also comes in a water based variant which is about $5 cheaper per bottle and stacks up pretty well performance wise. It also plays well with all your toys and the cheaper price makes it worth a look. Unfortunately you lose some of the longevity of the silicone version as the water does dry out after using it for an extended period of time.
If by chance you are looking for a more powerful relaxing effect and an added extra numbing agent then I recommend our previous years’ top pick, Pjur Backdoor.
It is a stronger formula and packs a bit more punch. You can check out the full Backdoor Review here to give you a better idea of what I mean.
But for most people, Analyse Me! Silicone is your best option as a well balanced, great feeling anal lube that is not over powering. Be sure to read the full Analyse Me review for a more in-depth look at my thoughts and impressions.
Pjur Analyse Me! Relaxing Anal Glide is MaleQ’s #1 selling anal lube.
The single best thing about Gun Oil? It lasts forever. Gun Oil is one of the slipperiest, smoothest, and long lasting lubes I have tested and its slickness makes it ideal for anal.
Overall, Gun Oil is a more “heavy duty” choice and good for the experienced trying to “go bigger”. I also have to tip my hat to the packaging – nothing about this bottle suggests “anal sex”. So, if you want something a little more discrete and heavy duty, you have found your match.
The main difference between the Premium Man Extreme Glide and Analyse Me! is the lack of a numbing and relaxant agent. The consistency seems to be slightly thicker than the Analyse Me! which I like a bit better. If you are a loyal Pjur fan and are looking for the same quality and feel but don’t need the numbing agent then this one is for you.
Like their silicone counterparts, water based lubes are completely condom safe and great for anal sex. The main difference between water and silicone-based lubricants is how long they last. The major disadvantage to a water-based anal lubes is that the body absorbs the water and therefore the lube can dry out rather quickly. This means that you will need to re-apply it fairly regularly.
On the other hand, this means that water lubes are a breeze to clean up because unlike silicone lubes, there is no oily residue left over. Moreover, water based lubes are also friendly with all toys, as silicone lubes with silicone toys are a no-no. Not to mention, water lubes are often a cheaper alternative, and therefore come in more generous quantities.
There are two things I look for when picking a water lube – consistency and longevity. In this case, H2O beats all other lubes out there.
It is one of the longest lasting water based lubes I have ever tested and has a thick slippery feel.
I have tested so many water lubes that dry out and don’t perform anywhere close to silicone, but if I didn’t know any better I would have guessed Elbow Grease to be a water-silicone hybrid, as it is super thick and super slippery. Best of all, it comes in large bottles and a little bit goes a long way. Let’s not forget that it plays well with any toy you throw at it making it a more versatile option.
Since I posted this article I have had a number of readers request me to add Swiss Navy to the list. I decided to give it a try for myself and I can easily understand why this lube has such a great reputation.
It is a heavy duty, ultra slick and water-based, yet gives all the slippery fun plus a little more. If you are going the extra mile, or the extra hour in the bedroom this will definitely keep up to pace. Not to mention it is very inexpensive for the amount of lube you get.
In terms of price and performance, you will not find a lube with a better value. At a mere $10 a bottle, Smooth and Slick gets you the biggest bang for your buck. The low price means I was never afraid to use it generously, which in terms of anal sex, the more the better.
To top it off, despite its low price, it is actually a surprisingly good feeling lube. If you are on a budget or looking for a good pair lube with one the more high-end brands, then Smooth and Slick is your best bet.
This category of lubes is last on the list because if you plan on practicing safer-sex (i.e. using condoms) then you need to be more mindful. These are lubricants made from an oil base which means they are not latex compatible and will break down condoms and some toys. But one of the goals of this list is to show you ALL of your options.
So, if you want to use a condom then DO NOT use oil lubes.
But now that that’s out of the way, as the name states, oil lubes are made from oil and are some of the slipperiest, longest lasting lubes you can buy! They are great for extended play and mean you never have to lube up again halfway through sex! These are also a great option for non-latex toys and only become more slippery as you add heat!
As a drawback oil base lubes are more of a pain to clean up and can take multiple washes with soap and hot water to finally go away. But if you can see past these drawbacks they are some of the best performing lubes out there!
Elbow grease is a creamy oil lube and is about as slippery as it gets. Yes, there is no anal relaxant included like with Analyse Me! but in terms of raw lubrication Elbow Grease tops out.
This is more for the heavy duty user, and if you are looking to reduce friction to as little as possible and “go a little bit bigger” with a toy or the real thing then this will help make you more comfortable and those bigger sizes more manageable. For the mo more adventurous user, you should make this your first option.
ID him is a very similar lube with very similar performance. Yes, it is also oil-based and comes as a cream which is easy to apply and super slippery. This is the Him leather variant which has a leather scent, which I personally like and I think adds a bit to the “kink” factor.
So why is this listed as number two? Like I said these are nearly identical, but I found the clean-up with him to be a bit more of a pain. Plus, the leather might now be for everyone. But what Him does have to offer is price so it is still worth giving a look.
In addition to buying the right anal lube, you should also look into getting an anal lube injector. This makes applying lube as a bottom effortless. It literally shoots a generous amount of lube deep inside making prep extremely easy. It took me awhile to start using one, but it was well worth making the switch.

My current usage actually a combination of silicone based and water based lubes. This gets the best of both worlds. I get the relaxing effects of the Pjur Analyse Me, and the option to use as much of a cheaper water-based lube like Swiss Navy as I need.
